I am Barbara Dwersteg Norum  a potter who started working in clay in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan , then on to Illinois for seven year and as of December 2009 in Berkeley, California. Currently working at the Berkeley Potter’s Studio until I can establish my home studio.

Moving is great for artists as you are exposed to new ideas and techniques in each environment. Now working in high fire clay and with gas firing new dimensions are evolving in my work.

Although introduced to clay as a high school student it took many years until I found my way back to it. A career in nursing and raising a family took precedence. In 1993 I joined the Saskatoon Potters Guild in Saskatoon, SK, Canada where I continued to develop techniques in producing functional pottery. In 2003 a move with my husband to Lemont, Illinois I became very active in the Lemont Artists Guild as well as working in my own studio.

My work is predominantly wheel thrown and functional using stoneware. Most pieces are microwave, dishwasher and oven safe. To begin with light colored clay bodies, with light glazes provide an excellent background for under and over glaze decorations. However experimenting with other clay bodies and firing techniques I have been adding more texture to my pieces and letting the form become the decoration.  I still love firing using sawdust in a garbage can kiln outdoors, just need to find a place I can do that in California!

Barbara’s work can be purchased at the Berkeley Potter’s Studio, 637 Cedar Street (corner of Cedar and 3rd), Berkeley, CA or contact her directly by phone or email.
